The Extracurricular Trap

Modern American society offers families an unbelievable smorgasbord of organized activities for their children. Sports, scouts, clubs, music, dancing—any parent could quickly compile a long list of his children’s options, each of them appealing and most of them worthwhile. But as every mother or father who sits down to an empty dinner table knows, kids can have too much of a good thing. Tom Spence, who has raised ten busy children, offers advice on setting your family’s priorities. Deciding what a child really needs will help parents figure out what is important and what is expendable.

BIOGRAPHY

Tom Spence, the president of Regnery Publishing, grew up in Waco. He met his wife, Amy, at Dartmouth College, and they have raised their ten children in Boston, Dallas, and Washington. Their six grandchildren live a little too far away.

Defending Against Darkness: Inoculating Our Children Against Cultural Despair

Children today are experiencing the highest rates of suicide, depression, anxiety, and hopelessness that we’ve ever seen. These issues are related to a number of major social and cultural changes that have stripped away a sense of meaning and purpose, connection, and a coherent identity. In this talk Dr. Breuninger will explore some of these cultural shifts and discuss concrete, practical ways that we, as fathers, can help inoculate our children against the despair and hopelessness that are endemic in the culture.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Matthew Breuninger is an assistant professor of psychology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He earned an MA in Theology from Ave Maria University and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Baylor University. Dr. Breuninger is a licensed clinical psychologist. His academic interests comprise the intersection of faith and psychology, psychology of religion, and virtue formation. He and his wife have 5 children.

Fostering Family Culture, Telling a Good Story

In recent years, learning how to ‘tell your story’ has become the trendy mantra of everyone from marketing consultants to business writers to hopeful politicians. Clearly, the world of today’s professional elite recognizes the power of story. Yet there is little attention given to the importance of stories gracing the venue in which it is most at home: the family. Storytelling in the home can be an immense gift that a father shares with his wife and children. Learning how to do it well will establish tradition, strengthen relationships, and provide vision for the glory of vocation that awaits each member of the family

BIOGRAPHY

Colin Gleason is a 1999 alumnus of the Heights School in Potomac, MD. He is currently the Heights Head of the Lower School and its Head Varsity Soccer Coach, for which he has been named Coach of the Year several times.
