Young singles and couples recently attended a talk at Patrick McCarthy’s house on the importance of marriage and family. The talk was outside in the hot Houston July heat, but luckily the McCarthy’s served delicious tacos and cold margaritas to happily distract us from the heat.
The talk was given author and speaker Mr. Pat Fagan on the urgency of life. Pat, who is the Director of MARRI (Marriage and Religion Research Institute) at The Catholic University of America, spoke to the young singles and young married couples about the need to get serious about life and realize the immense joy of family life sooner rather than later. Today many single people put off marriage to chase career and financial goals, and many young married couples delay the arrival of children until they feel they are financially secure. Pat insisted instead, that the young people exhibit courage and prudence in their pursuit of higher goals. Having recently turned 70 himself, Pat testified to the unbelievably fast passage of time. Several people stayed after the talk to chat with Pat, the talk certainly generated a lot of intense conversations. For many of these young people the talk was the proverbial ‘hot topic.’
